Deborah and Tom Slaton ’70 Make Estate-Plan Gift to Continue Their Support of Butler Men’s Basketball

Photo of Deborah and Tom Slaton ’70Tom Slaton ’70 and his wife Deborah get peace of mind from knowing that Butler will benefit from their estate planning. When it came time for the Slatons to begin the estate-planning process, they both agreed they wanted to include two educational passions: Butler and the University of Kentucky.

While not a graduate of Butler, Deborah—a graduate of Texas Tech and the University of Florida—worked in higher education at the University of Kentucky for 26 years, and she and Tom knew they wanted their estate gift to help young people and be a positive influence on students as they start their careers.

“The whole sense of the Butler Family is very real,” said Deborah. “We will be on campus for an event or a game and Tom will always see someone he knows. The uniqueness of Butler’s close-knit campus is always something I have admired.”

As a lasting legacy, the Slaton’s gift to Butler will help to support the Butler Men’s Basketball program because they believe supporting athletics is a strategic investment in Butler. It will continue to raise the visibility and reputation of the University and in turn will also help academic programs.

“For individuals who are thinking what might come of their estate, this has been a good solution for us,” said Deborah. “It is a great feeling to know that our estate plan will allow for programs to thrive and continue after we are gone.”
