Mike and Mary Chapman Give Back to Butler

When Mike Chapman ’65 reflects on his experience with Butler University, opportunity is at the core of almost every story.

At North Central High School in Indianapolis, Mike played for Marvin Wood—storied coach of high school state basketball champs the "Milan Miracle." He would eventually meet Wood's former coach, Tony Hinkle, who offered him a golden opportunity to study and play basketball for Butler.

Back then, games were played at the Butler Fieldhouse (now Hinkle Fieldhouse), a space Mike calls "one of the greatest arenas in the world." He describes it as "a magic place where the building itself radiates energy, leaving an indelible impression on all who have the good fortune to compete on its court."

The Fieldhouse holds special memories for Mike's wife, Mary, too. She would often accompany her father to Butler basketball games and remembers a few of the players during Mike's years. (She's quick to note that Mike is not one of those players.) The couple was so fond of Hinkle, they jumped at the chance to name one of the athletic department conference rooms as part of the Hinkle Campaign—just one of the ways they have chosen to give back to Butler.

Mike attributes his success in life to the many opportunities that Butler afforded him. From his athletic endeavors, he realized the importance of understanding fundamentals, having a strong work ethic, and the benefits of teamwork. Coach Hinkle was committed to his players beyond the court, teaching Mike to be his best while helping others do the same.

Mike learned about tradition and honor from his Sigma Chi fraternity brothers; Butler's Dean of Men, Herb Schwomeyer; and Butler assistant basketball coach, Bob Dietz. And, when he graduated, Mike took those lessons and built two successful and rewarding careers—one as a salesman with M-J Insurance, Inc. and the other as a private business owner.

Today Mike and his family graciously give back to Butler through an annuity. This commitment ensures that others have the same opportunities Mike had well into the future. He encourages others to invest in Butler University through a planned gift. Ever the competitor, he sums it up as the ultimate "win-win."
